»The surah that mentions The Confederates of the unbelievers, who besieged Medina, with an overwhelming force, but whom God routed with winds and a sandstorm in what became known as the Battle of the Ditch (in reference to the digging of a wide trench around the city as a barrier to invasion, an unprecedented practice in Arabia) in AH 5/627 CE (verse 9 ff.). It takes its name from verse 20 which refers to the campaign of the “confederates” (aḥzāb) against the Prophet. The believers dug a ditch, which the disbelievers were unable to cross, and eventually the enemy retreated in disarray. This is mentioned in order to remind the believers of God’s goodness to them, so that they may obey the numerous instructions given in the surah, starting with the regulation of adoption and including proper conduct towards the Prophet, his Ahl al-Bayt and his wives. The hypocrites are warned to stop their bad behaviour.«

The surah is also known as: The Allied Troops, The Coalition, The Confederate Tribes, The Confederaters, The Federated Clans, The Joint Forces.

Surah Al-Ahzab (bahasa Arab: الْأحزاب) adalah surah ke-33 dalam al-Qur'an. Terdiri atas 73 ayat, surah ini termasuk golongan surah-surah Madaniyah, diturunkan sesudah surah Ali Imran. Dinamai Al-Ahzab yang berarti golongan-golongan yang bersekutu karena dalam surah ini terdapat beberapa ayat, yaitu ayat 9 sampai dengan ayat 27 yang berhubungan dengan peperangan Al-Ahzab, yaitu peperangan yang dilancarkan oleh orang-orang Yahudi yang bersekutu dengan kaum munafik serta orang-orang musyrik terhadap orang-orang mukmin di Madinah.

Pokok-pokok isinya

1. Keimanan: Cukuplah Allah saja sebagai Pelindung; takdir Allah tidak dapat ditolak; Nabi Muhammad SAW adalah contoh dan teladan yang baik; Nabi Muhammad SAW adalah rasul dan nabi yang terakhir; hanya Allah saja yang mengetahui kapan terjadinya kiamat.
2. Hukum-hukum: Hukum zhihar; kedudukan anak angkat; dasar waris mewarisi dalam Islam ialah hubungan nasab (pertalian darah); tidak ada iddah bagi perempuan yang ditalak sebelum dicampuri; hukum-hukum khusus mengenai perkawinan Nabi dan kewajiban istri-istrinya; larangan menyakiti hati Nabi.
3. Kisah-kisah: Perang Ahzab (Khandaq); kisah Zainab binti Jahsy dengan Zaid; memerangi Bani Quraizhah.
4. Dan lain-lain: Penyesalan orang-orang kafir di akhirat karena mereka mengingkari Allah dan Rasul-Nya; sifat-sifat orang munafik.
